random, routine, empty tank

Happiness is shaking my finger, raising my voice, swallowing my swearwords, and leaning down into a 300 pound football player, who hears my voice and hears his momma and whose tears well up and who stops making excuses and says yes m'am hangs his head in shame. Then he promises to come to remediation where he will slave away under my watchful glare and alternate gentle understanding and he will frown and hunch over bad handwriting and dry texts and hate this and learn this if it kills him and he will pass senior english and graduate highschool and will never have to hang his head in shame, will never remember or will remember me with memories fond or hateful and maybe not grateful but he will owe me, all the same. I expect more out of you. That line is magical. It's true.

Having seen you in action, I'm not surprised by any of your comments. The combination of your fearlessness and your ability to relate to your students is impressive. I remember plenty of teachers with 25 years of experience who still had not mastered that.

Hi Elizabeth:
Rick Seifert here. Evan's dad and one of your first editors. Remember? Saw your dad today at Friends meeting and he told me about your blog. This entry fits in with the notion of teachable moments. Sometimes we teachers (I still teach at PCC) have to simply wait for them; some times we can make them; sometimes we simply create an environment in which they are very likely to happen. What do you think?
