Upon viewing my 2nd video-taped lesson, I created three lists, shown below.
Lacking:
volume (checked twice)
poise
composure
energy
speed
definitive language
air of authority
focused, directed, succinct set
organization of segues/'transition moments'
organization of board
monitoring of surly/apathetic kids
dramatic reading
decent shoes
decent hair
BAD teacher! Stop:
checking watch
hand in pocket (checked twice)
posing
leaning
slouching (checked once)
nervous behavior
scratching head, hands
fidgeting with pens, etc
goofy faces
goofy nodding
rolling eyes at self
"kid" tone
qualifiers that weaken language (ex.: sorta, kinda, maybe, possibly, perhaps,) and commands (would, could, I would like for you to, please, do you know vs tell me)
rhetorical questions
pausing to think (checked once)
spending too much time on set
spending too much time at board (get scribe)
But, At Least You:
Restated the objectives
Gave Ari (who finished early) extra reading
Made Matt raise his hand, restate and not quote from the text
Improved structure (not saying much)
Had a kind demeanor/conversational tone
Had a nice outfit. The suit-jacket is your friend. It's concealing but not baggy, professional. Also you look fairly clean. Nice work. Go buy suits. And shoes.
Walked around the room
Had an awesome dramatization. It was fun and useful, it got everyone involved and interested. Moving around is good for them. You even got energized with that. Plus they'll never forget what happened in that scene.
Had a great 'teacher face.' Very intimidating.
Called students by their last names. Students are adults until they prove otherwise.
